Vincent saw more soul in the natural environment too. Every time Vincent took his long walks through the countryside, he exalted in the gentle purples of heath fields or described with enthusiasm the sparkling effects of a late afternoon sun reflected in countless puddles along a muddy lane. And he saw metaphors everywhere:
Sometimes I yearn to paint a landscape, just as one has the desire for a long refreshing walk, and then I see in all of nature, in trees for example, a real expressiveness and a soul. A row of pollard willows sometimes reminds me of a procession of orphaned almshouse men. Young corn can express something indescribably pure and gentle that awakens in me the same emotions as when I see a sleeping child, for example. And the trodden-down grass on the side of a road looks weary and covered in dust like the inhabitants of an impoverished neighborhood. Last time when it snowed I saw a row of frozen Savoy cabbage that reminded me of a group of women in their worn-out skirts and old shawls standing early in the morning at a cellar where hot water and fire could be bought.11
